The earthquake that hit southwest China's Sichuan region early on Thursday morning claimed the lives of at least two people and wounded scores more, according to official media sources.

The earthquake's magnitude was measured at 6.0, according to the news source. The earthquakes were recorded at 4:33 a.m. local time on Thursday morning in Luxian county at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles), according to the Xinhua news agency.


The earthquake's centre occurred about 200 kilometres (120 miles) southeast of Chengdu, the province capital.


At least 35 homes have collapsed in the affected area, according to preliminary estimates from state broadcaster CCTV. Sixty people have been wounded, three of them are severely injured, according to preliminary reports.


Western China is an earthquake-prone region that experiences regular earthquakes. In June of this year, another 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Sichuan, killing 12 people and injuring 134 more.
